Will having an implanted port affect my lifestyle?
After your port is initially placed, you should try to avoid
heavy physical activity. Once the site has healed, you should be able to
return to your normal daily activities. However, you should still consult with your doctor or nurse about your specific situation.
Who pays for implanted ports?
Policies often differ so you should check with your insurance company about their specific terms and conditions.
Do I have to avoid wearing certain types of clothing?
It depends where your port was placed. You should consult with your doctor for more information.
Do I need to wear a bandage?
Initially, a
bandage will be applied to your incision site until it heals. After the
incision has healed, a bandage will not be required if the port is not
being used. If you are receiving continuous infusions of fluids or
medications, a bandage may be applied to stabilize and protect the
needle while it is in place.
Will the port activate metal detectors or security alarms?
Most security systems are not sensitive enough to detect the small amount of metal contained in your port. If this does occur, simply show your Patient Identification Card.
How long will I have my port?
The port can stay in place for as long as your doctor determines that you need it.
Can the port be removed if I no longer need it?
If your doctor determines that your implantable port is no longer needed, it can safely be removed in a simple procedure.
